2010 November 11 – Have a Laugh for Lung Health

The Australian Lung Foundation and renowned comedian Fiona O’Loughlin invite all South-East Queensland residents to ‘have a laugh for lung health’ at their annual fundraising event in Brisbane City tomorrow (Friday 12 November 2010).

Tickets are still available for the ‘Lunch for Lungs’ gala event that promises guests hours of fun, food and frivolity – with proceeds going towards funding for The Australian Lung Foundation’s first full-time specialist lung care nurse, Ainsley Ringma.

CEO of The Australian Lung Foundation, William Darbishire, said last year’s inaugural Lunch for Lungs raised enough funds for Ainsley to be appointed part-time to provide specialist clinical information, advice and support to thousands of Australians affected by lung disease.

“Ainsley is a highly experienced Respiratory Nurse Consultant whose services are now in such demand that we really need her fulltime.  With your help, Ainsley can continue her vital role with The Australian Lung Foundation and expand her work next year by piloting our lung cancer telephone support groups for Australians battling lung cancer,” Mr Darbishire said.

The deadliest lung disease, lung cancer is currently the biggest cancer killer in Australia with about 7,600 dying from the disease each year – that’s 20 Australians who die of lung cancer every day.

Contrary to popular belief, lung cancer doesn’t discriminate – it affects men and women, smokers and non-smokers, the old and the young, and more women die from lung cancer then breast and ovarian cancer combined.
