2012 December 30 – Surf Competition Raises Funds for Lung Cancer

The Paul Ebsworth Memorial Surf Competition will be held at Greenmount Beach on Saturday, December 22 from 9am. The competition is in its fifth year now and is raising funds for the Australian Lung Foundation.

Paul Ebsworth was a 52 year old man who owned his own business and had never smoked a day in his life. His life was tragically cut short in 2006 when he was diagnosed with lung cancer caused from passive smoking and died four months after diagnosis.

Paul’s son Blake organises the Paul Ebsworth Memorial Surf Competition every year in memory of his father. “Dad was a much loved and respected self-employed family man who lived on the coast for over 30 years. Paul worked at many hospitality venues at the southern end of the coast. He turned his hand at most things and was always striving to better support his family and future life, he had time for everybody as they did for him. His beautiful smile and kind disposition will always be remembered and missed,” said Blake Ebsworth about his father.

Blake is expecting this year’s surf competition to be bigger and better than ever. “About 40 surfers will enter in the competition and a lot of people come down for the day,” said Mr Ebsworth.

“Throughout the day, there will be an open male surf comp and an open female surf comp and it only costs surfers $20 for entry,” said Mr Ebsworth.

“There will be shirts and food and drinks sold on the day but we are still on the lookout for more sponsors. The winning surfers will each receive a trophy and prizes,” said Mr Ebsworth.

Australian Lung Foundation CEO William Darbishire said the charity was looking forward to the surf competition. “We are extremely grateful that Blake has decided to generate funds and awareness for us,” Mr Darbishire said.

“Over 50 Australians die from lung disease each day. The funds raised will help us continue our fight against lung disease and to spread the word about the importance of lung health,” said Mr Darbishire.
