Third annual Just One Breath Gala Dinner
On 22 October, we held a fantastic event at the Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation Hall in Sydney which was attended by over 270 people. The venue set the scene for the evening, with its high ceiling and marble columns and pre-dinner drinks were held on the veranda overlooking the beautiful Darling Harbour. Lillian Leigh, a compelling and admirable ambassador for Lung Foundation Australia, spoke eloquently about her experience living with lung cancer.
The night included a live and silent auction but the real fun began when James Morrison and his Motown band took to the stage. Their performance was nothing short of brilliant and had the dance floor at capacity from start to finish.
The Gala Dinner is now truly becoming the premier Lung Foundation Australia event and continues to raise significant funds to support our work. We convey our sincere appreciation to sponsors, Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, Sanofi, Novartis, Actelion, Slater+Gordon, AstraZeneca and Menarini for the outstanding support provided and thank all our guests for giving so generously.
Love Your Lungs Fun Run and Walk
To mark the end of Lung Health Awareness Month, the Lung Foundation held its inaugural Love Your Lungs Fun Run and Walk in Melbourne on 27 November. The event was supported by Collingwood Football Club who provided the outstanding Glasshouse venue and iconic Olympic Oval for the event.
We were delighted by the success of our event which saw 383 eager runners, walkers and joggers from all ages take part in this family fun day. Official proceedings were conducted by Eddie McGuire and our own Board member, Mr Tony Hyams, who was the inspiration behind this event.
With huge thanks to Eddie McGuire, Collingwood Football Club, Ego Pharmaceuticals, Breath-A-Tech, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Yarris, Credit Suisse, City of Melbourne Council, Swinburne University, Goodlife Fitness and Tony Hyams for their incredible support and sponsorship.
Our Lung Heros
We thank all our Love Your Lungs Fun Run and Walk participants, however make special mention of Jade and Chantelle Rocks who with their extended family and friends formed ‘Team Rocksy’ and raised an impressive $12,000 which will go towards supporting research into Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).
Jade and Chantelle were motivated to try and make a difference for people living with a lung disease as their father Terry Rocks had been diagnosed with IPF. In late October 2016, the family received the news that Terry had been accepted onto the lung transplant list and only a couple of weeks later, on 8 November, Terry received a new set of lungs.
Jade and Chantelle said, “Not enough is known about IPF and we felt we had to help in some way. We will be forever grateful that our Dad now has a second chance at life and want to raise funds to support research into this disease.”
