Asbestos-Related Disease/Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Online Nurse Education Program

Lung Foundation Australia is now offering an Asbestos-Related Disease/Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (ARD/MPM) Online Nurse Education Program to registered and enrolled nurses.

The ARD/MPM Nurse Education Program has been designed to help nurses develop an understanding of best practice care for patients with ARD/MPM.

The ARD/MPM Nurse Education Program takes three months to complete with 10 – 15 nurses enrolled to undertake the study period as a cohort led by our Nurse Educator.

Completion of the three month program entitles eligible participants to claim 18 CPD hours from the Australian College of Nursing (ACN).

The three study cohort dates for 2016 are:

  • 22 March 2016
  • 24 May 2016
  • 24 July 2016

Program Objectives

The objectives of the program are to:

  •  Deliver a specialised national nurses’ education program to provide support and coordinated care for patients who have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease with a focus on malignant pleural mesothelioma;
  • Improve nurses’ understanding and management of patients with an asbestos-related disease; and
  • Empower nurses to work effectively within their multidisciplinary teams to improve patient management and care to provide a better quality of life for patients living with an asbestos related disease.

Learning Outcomes:

This course is designed for nurses to develop an understanding in caring for patients with ARD/MPM.

It enables nurse participants to:

  • Acquire specialist knowledge that will inform evidence based mesothelioma nursing practice during the provision and coordination of patient care;
  • Develop specialist clinical practice and clinical decision making skills to ensure appropriate assessment and management of patients with ARD/MPM;
  • Develop professional relationships with multidisciplinary team members;
  • Foster caring relationships with patients and carers;
  • Examine their ability to reflect on personal and professional values, in relation to patients with ARD/MPM;
  • Develop leadership skills and provide support and resources to other health professionals in this area of health provision;
  • Maintain currency with literature & nursing practice in the care of ARD/MPM patients.

Course Structure:

The ARD/MPM Nurse Education Program takes three months to complete. There will be three study periods throughout 2016. Each study period will enrol 10 – 15 nurses to undertake the study period as a cohort led by a Nurse Educator. Study periods and enrolment dates are posted on this page.

The education program will consist of:

  • Nine online learning modules (8 hours – 10 hours);
  • Practical clinical experience activities (6 hours); and
  • Compulsory weekly online discussions.

The online modules include:

  1. Introduction;
  2. The epidemiology and history of asbestos and asbestos-related disease/malignant pleural mesothelioma;
  3. Data collection and the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma;
  4. What is an asbestos-related disease?
  5. Symptoms and management of malignant pleural mesothelioma;
  6.  Diagnosing asbestos-related disease/malignant pleural mesothelioma;
  7. Treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma;
  8.  Living with malignant pleural mesothelioma; and
  9. Legal and financial matters.

The compulsory practical clinical experience activities include: (6 hours)

  • Interviewing a patient with mesothelioma and provide an clinical assessment and care plan;
  •  Interviewing a colleague  and discuss a difficult situation in your work practice;
  • Accessing a radiology department with radiologist to review, interpret and understand the interpretation of a chest x ray and CT scan of a patient with MPM;
  •  Participating in peer review to demonstrate understanding the key concepts;
  • Organising a time with a legal firm/organisation to discuss legal entitlements in your state.

Weekly Online Discussion Requirements:

  • All participants will be required to go online weekly to discuss their progress and relevant discussion points posted by the Nurse Educator conducting the education program.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for this education program, applicants must provide with their Expression of Interest:

  • Their current registered/enrolled nurse registration number.
  • A statement of 50 words or less outlining your experience working in respiratory, surgical, community or oncology nursing and explaining why you wish to complete this education program.

Criteria for successful completion of the ARD/MPM Nurse Education Program completion:

For the nurse to successfully complete this education program they must:

  • Complete the online modules with an 80% pass rate
  • Complete the online exam with an 80% pass rate
  • Complete the online Case Study with an 80% pass rate
  • Complete the clinical assessment component of 6 hours
  • Participate in the compulsory weekly online forum discussion
  • Complete a pre/post evaluation

As part of their enrolment in the ARD/MPM Nurse Education Program the nurse will receive access to:

  • The online training program.
  • A nurse educator for general discussion and support/feedback.
  • The Australian and New Zealand Lung Cancer Nurses Forum website for group discussions.
  • Downloadable assessment tools and patient handouts.
  • Practice quizzes to test their knowledge.

Along with your completed Expression of Interest form you will need to provide:

  • Your current registered/enrolled nurse registration number.
  • A statement of 50 words or less outlining your experience working in respiratory, surgical, community or oncology nursing and explaining why you wish to complete this education program.

On admittance to the ARD/MPM Online Nurse Education Program an enrolment form will be sent to you for completion including payment details of the enrolment fee. You will be sent your log-in details once your enrolment form and payment have been received and processed.

The ARD/MPM Online Nurse Education Program enrolment fee is $395 (inc. GST) and bulk discounts are available for purchases of ten enrolments or more. While the education program is conducted over a three month period access to the online platform will be provided for 12 months from commencement date for use as an ongoing professional resource.
