A focus on fundraising

Just One Breath Cycle Challenge

In August, cycling enthusiasts came together to help raise awareness and much needed funds to support lung research at Lung Foundation Australia’s inaugural Just One Breath Cycle Challenge. About 20 teams, making 100 riders, took to the track at Lakeside International Raceway in Brisbane’s north to peddle the vital message that when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.

Lung Foundation Australia CEO, Heather Allan, said collectively the group rode more than 5,000 kms – that’s all the way from Sydney to Perth and even a little bit of the way back. Among the riders were Russell Winwood, a marathon runner whose chronic lung disease has left him with only about 30 per cent lung capacity, and Anita McGrath, a Brisbane mum who is battling lung cancer. Skill levels out on the track varied from the lycra clad to those dressed up in costumes like Darth Vader or fairies, as well as the Lung Foundation’s pom pom waving cheer squad!

Together the teams raised an outstanding $85,000 – a fantastic achievement which will go towards helping the millions of Australians with a lung disease and look to change the landscape for future generations.

Love Your Lungs Fun Run and Walk Melbourne, 27 November

Calling all Melbournians! Lung Foundation Australia is delighted to announce that registrations are open to take part in our family- friendly Love Your Lungs Fun Run and Walk. We are holding this event to help raise awareness, as well as much needed funds to support the vital work of the Lung Foundation. With the support of the Collingwood Football Club, we are fortunate to have been provided exclusive use of the Holden Centre and Glasshouse venue to hold the event. This means that you and your family can get the chance to run/walk on the Olympic Oval, as well as meet some of the Collingwood players. We will have a few activities after the fun run to entertain the entire family.
As the event is open to everyone and caters for all fitness levels, we really encourage all of our supporters and patients to take part. For further details and to register please visit our website loveyourlungs.lungfoundation.com.au or phone 1800 654 301 today – we need your support!

Our fundraising champions

In our line of work, we often get to meet some inspirational people and Bill van Nierop is one such person. With the support of his employer, AGnVET and generous donations from other organisations like ADAMA Australia, Bill is on a crusade to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and funds to support research into this rare lung disease. Bill has IPF which is a progressive, incurable and fatal chronic lung disease, however, this did not stop him from taking part in the City2Surf fun run in Sydney in August and raising an incredible $16,313 through his fundraising page. What an inspiration, thank you Bill.

Through Bill’s networks and AGnVET, Lung Foundation Australia has been chosen as their charity of choice for 2017. This means that at all the functions attended by AGnVet, they will be raising funds for Lung Foundation Australia and there will be collection tins and Lung Health Checklist information in all their store locations across rural NSW and QLD. Thank you AGnVET for your valuable support.
