COPD Nurse Online is an interactive training program aimed at increasing the knowledge, confidence and skills of nurses and other health professionals in the identification, diagnosis and management of patients with COPD.

The training has a series of 18 modules which include:

  • case studies and videos
  • care plans and the Medical Benefits Schedule
  • downloadable assessment tools and patient handouts
  • quizzes to test knowledge

By the end of this training course health professionals will be able to:

  • identify people at risk of COPD
  • educate patients on COPD and evidence-based management
  • support patients and motivate them to engage in self-management practices
  • develop self-management plans with patients
  • work effectively with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team.

The Lungs in Action Full Instructor Training program has been designed to provide accreditation for personal trainers, fitness instructors, exercise physiologists and physiotherapists to deliver a community based exercise maintenance program for people with stable chronic lung disease who have completed a Pulmonary Rehabilitation program and people with stable NYHA Class II and Class III Heart Failure who have completed Heart Failure Rehabilitation.

This training program combines the Lungs in Action Online Theory Training and the Lungs in Action Instructor Accreditation Course (Practical Upgrade).

This training has been accredited for continuing professional development points with ESSA.

Lungs in Action Online Theory Training is an online continuing education tool for those who have a role in exercising people with chronic stable lung conditions and/or heart failure, or who are a part of a broader multidisciplinary team that provide these services.

It is also a great way for those who choose not to, or may not meet the requirements to be a Lungs in Action instructor but would still like to expand their knowledge and understanding with up to date best practice on exercise safety and limitations with this clientele.

This training has been accredited for continuing professional development points with ESSA and credits with Fitness Australia.

The Lungs in Action Practical Upgrade provides access to the practical component of the Lungs in Action Full Instructor package, for those who have already completed the Lung in Action Online Theory on a separate occasion.

Completion of this upgrade along with previous successful completion on the Lungs in Action Theory Online training has been designed to provide accreditation for personal trainers, fitness instructors, exercise physiologists and physiotherapists to deliver a community based exercise maintenance program for people with stable chronic lung disease who have completed a Pulmonary Rehabilitation program and people with stable NYHA Class II and Class III Heart Failure who have completed Heart Failure Rehabilitation.

The Lungs in Action Heart Failure training is designed to increase knowledge and awareness for those with a role in exercising people with Heart Failure, or as a part of a broader multidisciplinary team that provide these services.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • distinguish the key components of exercise programming for those with heart failure
  • identify the safety precautions for exercising a person with heart failure
  • be able to recognise the limitations for exercising people with heart failure.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Training Online (PRT Online) is an interactive online training program for health professionals to increase their knowledge and confidence in the delivery of evidence-based, best practice pulmonary rehabilitation.

Modules provided in this training course include:

COPD Pharmacy Online is an interactive training program aimed at increasing the knowledge, confidence and skills of pharmacists in the identification and management of patients with COPD.

By the end of this training course pharmacists will be able to:

  • educate patients on COPD
  • educate patients on evidence-based management of COPD
  • motivate patients to engage in self-management practices for COPD, including the optimal use of medicines
  • implement a COPD case finding (risk assessment and screening) service with the pharmacy setting
  • work effectively with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team for patients with COPD.

Modules provided in this training course include:

  • The respiratory system and COPD
  • Role of the pharmacist in the management of COPD (including health promotion and disease management)
  • COPD medicines
  • Inhaler device technique
  • COPD case finding (risk assessment and screening)
  • Planning for a COPD service

This module provides information regarding the early identification and management of exacerbations of COPD.

By the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • identify the importance of early identification and management of exacerbations of COPD
  • educate patients on how to monitor their symptoms and develop individualised symptom management action plans with COPD patients and their carers
  • describe the value of using controlled oxygen and ventilation during an exacerbation and outline when a patient requires hospitalisation
  • recognise how to implement appropriate management for COPD patients with frequent exacerbations
  • recognise the role of general practice in review and follow-up

  • smoking and interventions to support smoking cessation
  • immunisation for patients with COPD
  • oxygen therapy, prescription and equipment options for patients.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • explain the risks of smoking and benefits of stopping
  • outline effective interventions for smoking cessation such as counselling and pharmacotherapy
  • describe the benefits of immunisation for a patient with COPD
  • explain who benefits from home oxygen and how the need for oxygen therapy is assessed and monitored
