What Is Targeted Therapy For Lung Cancer?

Targeted therapies for lung cancer are drugs that target specific mutations within cancer cells.

You will need to have molecular testing done on your lung cancer to know if there is a particular targeted therapy that could be right for you.

The most common “targets” in non-small cell lung cancer are gene changes in EGFR, ALK and ROS1.

It is important that you speak to your oncologist or healthcare provider to understand what lung cancer treatment options are most appropriate for you. You can also book a free telephone appointment with Lung Foundation Australia’s Lung Cancer Support Nurse.

What is targeted therapy? Targeted therapies are medications that target the specific mutations within cancer cells. When you were first diagnosed, you should have molecular testing done of your lung cancer to see if there’s a particular targeted therapy that could be right for you. The most common mutations or targets tested for in non-small lung cancer cells are EGFR, ALK, and ROS1. I’m living with EGFR lung cancer. Make sure you speak to your doctor to find out if a targeted therapy is right for you.

In my case, I had a biopsy done on the lung cancer when I was first diagnosed and that revealed that I had the EGFR mutation. This was critical in terms of the treatment my oncologist set out for me, and it’s something that you need to make sure you get done.
