What is a cough?
A cough is the body’s way of cleaning out the lungs. We cough to clear unwanted spit (mucus or phlegm) from our breathing tubes. The most common cause of a cough is a cold. Usually, the cough caused by a cold goes away within three weeks. When coughing lasts longer than this, speak to your doctor or health worker to check what’s going on.
It’s hard to know if a cough is trying to tell you something “It’s probably nothing”, we tell ourselves. But paying attention to that cough and getting help from your doctor early can make a big difference. Coughing becomes a problem when it:
- hangs around (for more than eight weeks)
- includes other symptoms such as feeling out of wind
- comes with pain, feeling worn out, not having a good night sleep or have lost weight.
If your cough’s been hanging around or making you feel out of wind, worn-out or sore, this could be a sign your lungs need a check-up.
Don’t wait. Checking your lungs early keeps you healthy, strong and here for your mob.
