Self care plan

Self care plan

Engaging in self-care means looking after your physical, mental, and emotional health. It can take many forms and doesn’t need to be time-consuming or expensive. Here are some tips adapted from the SANE Australia website:

  • Distract yourself: If you feel overwhelmed, try reading a book, watching TV, or gardening.
  • Stay connected: Keep in touch with supportive family and friends through calls or online.
  • Enjoy activities: Engage in activities you love, like reading, cooking, listening to music, walking, or spending time outdoors.
  • Physical health: Prioritize sleep and make healthy food choices.
  • Exercise: Incorporate exercise into your daily routine for health and stress relief. Try home exercise programs or physical activities like cleaning or gardening.
  • Talk about feelings: Share your feelings with a trusted friend via phone or video calls.
  • Identify stress indicators: Recognize signs of stress, such as a short temper, withdrawal, or feeling overwhelmed.
  • Be gentle with yourself: Take things slowly and find ways to feel calmer or happier.
  • Seek help: If needed, contact a Helpline service or speak with your GP, who can offer telehealth appointments.

Your GP can support you by preparing a Mental Health Treatment Plan, helping you access relevant services, and providing referrals. Health professionals, including psychologists and psychiatrists, also offer telehealth appointments.

A self-care plan involves activities supporting your physical, emotional, and psychological health. Practicing self-care can increase resilience and stress management. Regularly check in with yourself to assess your self-care strategies and adjust your plan as needed. If you have pre-existing mental health conditions, continue your treatment and be aware of new or worsening symptoms. Reach out to support services like Lifeline (13 11 14) for 24-hour assistance.
