Ask an Expert: Importance of Fit Testing

Hear from our expert speaker Michal Morgan from Fit Test Australia as he dives into the world of fit testing for respiratory equipment. This webinar forms part of a series that Lung Foundation Australia hosted during National Silicosis Prevention Awareness Campaign during National Safe Work Month in October 2025. Michal Morgan is an accredited, respiratory specialist at Fit Test Australia. He began this role in 2019 and a highlight for him includes assisting Ambulance Victoria with the implementation of their respiratory protection program, which was facilitated through a Department of Health and Human Service Tender in 2021. Michal received his RESP FIT accreditation in July 2023. He is currently travelling across Australia providing fit test services across various industries including mining, healthcare, construction and manufacturing.

Michal Morgan’s presentation outlines why fit testing is crucial for all workers, particularly if you are working with silica containing materials. Michal’s presentation answers questions like:

  1. What is a fit test?
  2. What should workers know about respiratory protective equipment?
  3. What are the different types of fit tests?
  4. What are the requirements for workers undergoing fit testing?
  5. How does facial hair impact fit testing and the integrity of respiratory equipment?
  6. When should workers get fit tested?
  7. What is a respiratory protection program?
  8. How does respiratory protective equipment protect workers?

During Michal’s presentation he provides many practice examples of when masks are improperly worn, modified and not maintained. He shows some examples from his experience conducting fit testing on workers across Australia. Michal helps workers understand the best way to clean, maintain and protect masks, how to ensure your filters are doing their job, to ensure the mask is functioning correctly.

Michal provides invaluable information for any worker who is required to use a mask (respiratory protective equipment) as part of their job.
