Australia’s leading respiratory clinicians, researchers, policymakers and consumer advocates will come together in Melbourne next week for the inaugural Australian COPD Symposium, hosted by Lung Foundation Australia.
Taking place at Pullman Melbourne on the Park from 12-13 June, the Symposium will bring together experts from across the full continuum of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) care to help shape the future of COPD management, research, implementation and policy in Australia.
The Symposium comes at an important time for the sector following the release of the National COPD Clinical Care Standard in late 2024 and growing recognition of the significant burden COPD continues to place on Australians and the healthcare team.
General Manager, Clinical Programs, Research and Innovation at Lung Foundation Australia, Alicia Goodwin, said the Symposium had been designed to foster meaningful national collaboration across COPD care, research and policy.
“COPD continues to place a significant burden on Australians and the healthcare system, reinforcing the need for greater collaboration, innovation and national focus across care, research and policy,” Ms Goodwin said.
“This symposium is about bringing together clinicians, researchers, consumers and healthcare leaders from across the country to share ideas, challenge the status quo and help shape the future of COPD care in Australia.”
The two-day program features national and international experts exploring the latest evidence, models of care, implementation strategies and emerging approaches to COPD prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management.
Sessions across the Symposium will examine topics including cardiovascular disease risk, innovations in treatment, equity access and efficient models of care, and the future direction of COPD policy and service delivery in Australia.
Leading respiratory experts featured in the program include Associate Professor Eli Dabscheck, Co-chair of the national COPD-X guidelines, Associate Professor Rebecca Disler, an internationally recognised researcher in advanced chronic disease and models of care; and Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan, whose research has helped shape national and international respiratory guidelines.
The Symposium will also showcase emerging talent through presentations from early career researchers and rising clinical leaders helping to drive the future of respiratory research and care in Australia.
