COPD for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers: BE WELL education video

The BE WELL COPD education video from Lung Foundation Australia is a free resource developed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners to build knowledge and confidence in supporting community members living with COPD.

Why use the BE WELL COPD education video?

This video was developed as part of the BE WELL (Breathe Easy Walk Easy Lungs for Life) project, an NHMRC-funded initiative that partnered with ACCHS to trial culturally safe pulmonary rehabilitation in community settings. It complements the BE WELL Yarning Scripts, Illustrations, and Resource Toolkit, offering health workers another way to engage with key COPD education content across the suite.

Key features of the BE WELL COPD education video

  • Developed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, with content grounded in BE WELL project research and community partnerships.
  • Covers core COPD education content to build health worker knowledge and support confident, culturally safe conversations with community members.
  • Free to access via YouTube, making it easy to view independently, share with colleagues, or use in group education sessions.
  • Part of a comprehensive suite of BE WELL resources forming the education component of a culturally safe pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Practical applications for health workers

The video can be used as a standalone learning resource for health workers new to COPD education, or alongside the BE WELL Yarning Scripts and Illustrations for those already delivering structured sessions. It can also be watched together with community members as a starting point for conversation.

The Learning from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with COPD guide is a free resource developed as part of the BE WELL project. Education resources were developed with funding from the NHMRC Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases for a project tilted: Implementing evidence into practice to improve chronic lung disease management in Indigenous Australians: the Breathe Easy, Walk Easy – Lungs for Life (BE WELL) project.

The development of the resources was led by Professor Jennifer Alison and Dr David Meharg, with support from Lung Foundation Australia.

The scripts were reviewed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals.

The Investigation team for the NHMRC GACD grant was: Prof Jennifer Alison, Prof Christine Jenkins, Prof Stephen Jan, Prof Graeme Maguire, Prof Tim Shaw, Prof Sarah Dennis, A/Prof Zoe McKeough, Dr Vanessa Lee.
