Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Training

First Nations lung cancer 

Lung cancer is a common cancer among Australian First Nations people. Early detection can improve survival rates and treatment options. This comprehensive training is designed to strengthen the capabilities of health workers/professionals in their mission to educate and support their communities in lung cancer prevention and management. This training program is a blend of e-learning module, presentations, and informative materials, that will provide health workers/professionals with the essential knowledge and tools to significantly improve lung cancer health within Australian First Nations communities.

This training program has been developed with a panel of clinical experts including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers/practitioners, consumers and clinicians. Their extensive knowledge and experience in the approach to care of First Nations people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer will be extremely beneficial to those in the community. The course is intended to be reviewed and updated every two years.

First Nations Lung Cancer: Health Workers:

The First Nations lung cancer e- module is a free e-Learning training program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers/professionals in addressing Australian First Nation individuals at risk of lung cancer and living with lung cancer. The training focuses on First Nations lung cancer and the skills required to effectively engage with First Nations individuals and their families to improve lung health outcomes.

The training includes one e-module which will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. The learning outcome for the First Nations Lung Cancer module is:

  • You will gain a comprehensive understanding of lung cancer within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people
  • The knowledge you acquire from this e-module training will enable you to effectively work with your people with lung cancer and their families. You will be equipped to educate people in the community about lung cancer risks, prevention strategies, and management techniques
  • You will have the capacity to raise awareness about lung cancer, promoting early detection, and supporting those affected.

Toolkit Components:

These the tools can be downloaded and used when engaging with your people in the community:

  • Information sheets: Access PDFs for handouts covering risk factors, prevention strategies, and support services
  • Story board: Snapshot of how lung cancer impacts Australian First Nations People. This can be printed and shared in storytelling to people in the community.
  • PowerPoint: A presentation with culturally appropriate graphics and key talking points allowing you to adapt to diverse cultural and educational settings. This can be downloaded for you to customise.
