Some people may have symptoms because of where a tumour is located, for example, if the tumour is near an airway, you may have a cough, or if it is blocking an airway, fluid can build up, making it easier for bacteria to grow and cause an infection.
Common symptoms of lung cancer
It’s important to see your doctor if you have any of these symptoms that don’t go away after 3 weeks:
Cough
A cough that won’t go away after a few weeks or gets worse.
Coughing up blood
This can be scary, but it’s important to see a doctor right away, even if you cough up blood in small amounts.
Trouble breathing
This can include shortness of breath or feeling like you can’t take a deep breath.
Feeling tired or weak
Feeling more tired or weaker than usual all the time.
Pain
A pain in your chest or shoulder.
Unexplained weight loss
Losing weight without trying.
Hoarse voice
Your voice sounds different or raspy.
Wheezing
Making a high-pitched whistling sound while breathing
Loss of appetite
Feeling less like eating than usual.
Having one or two of these symptoms doesn’t always mean you have cancer. These symptoms are not always specific to lung cancer and could relate to many other conditions.
Talk to your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. They can help you figure out what’s causing them.
