Lung Foundation Australia welcomes the Federal Budget 2021-22 announcement and allocation of new grant opportunities for lung disease research, including silicosis research.
Previously silicosis was a disease that was thought to be obsolete, however, this devastating condition has been on the rise in Australia, particularly among those working with artificial stone kitchen and bathroom benchtops. The $6 million research investment into silicosis research has been awarded across five grant recipients to address the epidemic of fatal silicosis caused by inhaling dust from artificial stone products.
Lung Foundation Australia acknowledges the tireless efforts of the National Dust Disease Taskforce, initiated by The Hon Greg Hunt MP. The work of the taskforce has resulted in this significant research investment.
The table below summarises the grant opportunity outcomes and openings relevant to lung disease.
