Lung Foundation Australia Empowers Patients on World Lung Day
As the world marks World Lung Day, Lung Foundation Australia is highlighting the transformative power of support and advice for those living with lung conditions. Lung Foundation Australia’s recent Lived Experience Research conducted four years after the benchmark 2020 study, has unveiled crucial insights into the challenges faced by individuals managing lung conditions and the opportunities to improve the care and support people receive.
Key findings from the survey reveal:
- Most people experience persistent cough, breathlessness, and fatigue as warning signs of lung disease, but many delay follow-up.
- Almost a third of patients required more than five GP visits before receiving a diagnosis, highlighting the need for improved early detection.
- Lung conditions extend far beyond physical symptoms—they disrupt every aspect of life, from emotional and social connections to financial stability.
- While most people living with a lung condition experience a significant impact on their physical movement, effects are often pervasive, with mental health, financial wellbeing, relationships, work and study all being moderately to significantly impacted. This impact is also felt by care-givers and families.
- Lung disease is often experienced as an invisible disability, leading to a loss of social connection and feelings of isolation.
- Stigma continues to have a real impact on those living with lung conditions.
The results underscore the critical need for accessible, quality information and support for those navigating a life and diagnosis of lung conditions. Lung Foundation Australia stands at the forefront of this mission, bridging the information and support gap between health professionals and patients to ensure optimal care and an improved quality of life.
“Our survey has reinforced what we’ve long known – with the right information, guidance and support, people with lung conditions can be more confident in managing their condition, enhancing their day-to-day lives,” said Mark Brooke, CEO of Lung Foundation Australia.
“This World Lung Health Day, we’re renewing our commitment to being that vital source of support for healthcare providers, individuals and their families.”
Lung Foundation Australia offers a range of resources and programs designed to inform and empower people with a lung condition effectively, arm health professionals with the latest research and best practices in lung health care and foster a supportive community for those affected by lung conditions.
