Lung Foundation Australia is calling on Australians to take action this May for Lung Health Awareness Month, encouraging people across the country to get involved in the Gift of Breath Challenge and support lung health.
From running major events like the Sydney Half Marathon, HBF Run for a Reason and the Great Ocean Road Runing Festival, to hosting morning teas, community fundraisers and personal challenges, Australians are already stepping up to make a difference.
Lung Health Awareness Month is a national call to action, highlighting that one in three Australians are impacted by lung disease or lung cancer, and that more must be done to improve awareness, support and outcomes.
Lung Foundation Australia Chief Development Officer, Christa Bayer, said the month is about turning everyday actions into meaningful impact.
“Lung Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for Australians to come together and take action for something that affects so many of us, the ability to breathe,” Ms Bayer said.
“The Gift of Breath Challenge is about doing something meaningful to you and dedicating it to lung health. Whether it’s running a marathon, hosting a morning tea or taking on a personal challenge, every action helps raise awareness and support Australians living with lung disease or lung cancer.”
This year, a group of dedicated trekkers will also take on the Larapinta Adventure, a four-day, 54-kilometre trek through the Red Centre from 11-16 May, raising much needed funds.
“We see people getting involved for many different reasons, to honour a loved one, to raise awareness, or to simply give back. What connects them all is a shared commitment to improving lung health,” Ms Bayer said.
“Through initiatives like Lung Health Awareness Month, we’re working to change the trajectory of lung disease in Australia, by driving awareness, supporting those impacted, and funding research that leads to better outcomes.”
Whether big or small, every action contributes to raising awareness, sparking important conversations, and helping Australians breathe easier.
