Living with pulmonary fibrosis: non-pharmacological treatments

Non-pharmacological treatments can play a crucial role in the management of Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) and improving patients’ quality of life. These treatments encompass a variety of approaches that do not involve medicine. One key aspect is maintaining physical activity, which can help manage symptoms, maintain strength, and support mental health. Patients are encouraged to engage in daily activities they enjoy, such as walking or gardening, and to consider pulmonary rehabilitation programs for structured exercise.

Nutrition is another important factor. A balanced diet supports overall health. Those experiencing a loss of appetite due to medication or breathlessness can benefit from smaller, more frequent meals. Quitting smoking is essential, as it enhances the effectiveness of treatments and overall health. Avoiding infections through good hygiene practices and vaccinations is also important, as infections can exacerbate the condition.

Oxygen therapy can be prescribed to help patients with breathlessness, improving their quality of life and enabling them to engage in daily activities with less difficulty. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs, which include endurance and strength training, are tailored to individual needs and can significantly reduce breathlessness and fatigue, enhancing physical and mental well-being.

For some patients, a lung transplant may be considered. This complex procedure involves strict criteria and a thorough evaluation process. While not everyone is eligible, those who undergo the surgery can experience extended life expectancy and improved quality of life. Palliative care is also an integral part of managing PF, focusing on relieving symptoms and providing support to patients and their families. It includes a range of services from symptom management to emotional and practical support.

Overall well-being and mental health are emphasised, with strategies to improve sleep, manage depression and anxiety, and maintain a sense of identity and purpose. It is important to discuss alternative therapies with your healthcare team to ensure they do not interfere with other medications your doctor has prescribed for you.
