This fact sheet from Lung Foundation Australia has been designed to help people living with pulmonary fibrosis (PF) to understand more about the antifibrotic medication, Nintedanib (Ofev), which helps slow down the build-up of scar tissue in the lungs caused PF.
Before starting Nintedanib, patients should inform their doctor about any medical conditions, allergies, and all medications they are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding should not take Nintedanib. Patients should also inform their doctor about any recent surgeries, as Nintedanib can affect wound healing.
The usual dose is one 150 mg capsule taken twice a day, approximately 12 hours apart. It is important to take Nintedanib with food and a full glass of water to reduce side effects. Capsules should not be chewed or crushed. If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double up on doses.
Regular blood tests are required to monitor for side effects, especially liver function tests, which are done monthly for the first six months and then every three months. Patients should also have regular check-ups with their healthcare provider to monitor lung function and overall health.
Common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, decreased appetite, and weight loss. There is a small risk of abnormal liver function tests. Serious side effects, which require immediate medical attention, include severe diarrhoea, severe stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, and unusual bleeding or bruising.
Patients are advised to stay connected with their healthcare team, keep vaccinations up to date, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, and seek support from family, friends, and support groups.
For more detailed information, patients should refer to the full Consumer Medicine Information leaflet and consult their healthcare provider.
