This webinar explores the use of technology in the self-management of your lung condition, and provides you with an exclusive insight into the pilot study of an Interstitial Lung Disease app for the management of PF. In this webinar, our consumer speakers provide an insight into their own experiences with the use of technology. Our clinical experts in this session include Prof Anne Holland and Dr Laura Glenn.
Patients share the various technologies used to manage pulmonary fibrosis (PF), including physical exercise equipment like treadmills and bikes, and digital tools for communication, documentation, and health monitoring. They have participated in face-to-face, home-based, and virtual pulmonary exercise programs, finding both in-person and remote sessions effective. Remote programs, facilitated by devices like iPads and oximeters, offer the advantage of eliminating geographic barriers. However, they require considerations for internet connectivity, audio-visual quality, and privacy. Patients also use note-taking apps to document medical appointments and track health data, enhancing his self-management and communication with healthcare professionals.
The webinar explores tele-rehab, where patients can use with their standard exercise equipment at home, to participate in virtual pulmonary rehabilitation. It includes an oximeter and a tablet for real-time interaction with a physiologist, simulating an in-person rehab program. Pulse oximeters help monitor oxygen saturation during rest, exercise, or oxygen therapy, though not everyone needs one. Consumer devices like step monitors in smartphones can track physical activity and motivate users. These devices, including home spirometry tools, aid in self-monitoring and management, providing insights into activity levels and health over time.
Home spirometry programs offer advice on technique but aren’t substitutes for clinic-based spirometry. Recording clinic data in apps or spreadsheets can help track progress over time. Various apps support self-management, from symptom monitoring to medication reminders. Choose apps based on personal goals, like medication adherence or physical activity tracking. It is important to discuss options with healthcare teams to find suitable tools. Devices like incentive spirometers linked to smartphones can aid breathing exercises. It is important to consult healthcare teams for personalised advice on using these technologies effectively.
