Working towards a strengths based approach

Working towards a strengths based approach

Facing a challenging condition, including lung disease or cancer, can impact your life and those around you. Acknowledging and using your strengths can support your emotional well-being through a strength-based approach, which focuses on your capabilities and connections.

Start by identifying your strengths, capabilities, and connections to fully utilize them for emotional support and resilience. Overcoming feelings of being overwhelmed may seem impossible initially, but with time and support, you can adjust your thinking.

Strengths can be varied, such as being a good listener or knowing it’s okay to cry. Writing down information during appointments is also a strength. Positive self-talk is crucial; avoid disheartening thoughts and focus on helpful words to develop a positive mindset.

Focusing on your strengths and what you can do helps regain control and improve resilience. Practice maintaining positive inner dialogue. Seek support from trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals to recognise and make the most of on your strengths.

Applying a strength-based approach can be natural or require effort. For example, if gardening is challenging due to your condition, focus on activities you can still enjoy, like observing flowers or birds. Occupational therapists can suggest modifications to make tasks easier.

Redefining family roles can be necessary. If you can’t perform certain tasks, find other ways to contribute, like planning meals or managing online chores. Adjusting to new roles can be challenging but focusing on what you can do is important.

Modifying activities and appreciating new aspects of life can help you recognise your strengths and maintain independence. If you or someone you know is affected by lung cancer or lung disease, reaching out to the Lung Foundation Australia can provide valuable support and information. They are dedicated to helping patients navigate their journey and access the best possible care.
