Vaping and young people – Young adults aged 18-24

Experimenting with substances and activities is common as you get older, but it’s up to you to make informed choices and take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing. This resource was developed with young Australians for young Australians to show the facts, raise the issues, and provide advice on vaping and e-cigarettes and how to take action when it comes to the risks.

The Health Risks of Vaping

Vaping is not safe and can lead to various health issues, including a racing heartbeat, chest pains, mouth and airway irritation, and vomiting. Vape liquids can contain toxic substances like formaldehyde, propylene glycol, and nicotine, which are harmful to health.

Why Vaping is Popular

Vaping has gained popularity among young people due to its novelty, appealing flavours, and ease of access. Vapes are often brightly coloured, small, and easy to hide. Social influences and the perception that vaping is less harmful than smoking also contribute to its popularity.

The Role of Marketing

The tobacco industry uses sophisticated marketing to glamorise vaping through social media, making it look cool and attainable. A common misconception is that vapes emit harmless water vapor, but they actually produce an aerosol containing toxic particles. Vaping can lead to nicotine addiction and cigarette smoking in the future, serving as a gateway to more health complications and risks.

Quitting Vaping

Like cigarette smoking, vaping can be a tough habit to stop. Nicotine is addictive so putting a plan in place with your family and friends and even seeking support from your doctor can help you commit and achieve your goals.

How to affect change

Taking positive action against vaping is a great call, and there has never been a better time to make your voice heard. Educating your networks on the risks and misconceptions of vaping is a great place to start.
Lead by example and demonstrate openness and willingness to discuss these issues with others. Your actions can have more of a positive impact than you realise.
