Lung Cancer Scorecard 2025

Lung Cancer Scorecard 2025

Lung Foundation Australia’s Lung Cancer Scorecard 2025 provides a comprehensive snapshot of how lung cancer compares to other common cancers in Australia, specifically prostate, breast and skin cancer. Since the release of the 2023 Lung Cancer Scorecard, mortality rates have increased across all four cancers, highlighting the ongoing challenges in cancer prevention and treatment. Encouragingly, the five-year survivorship rates have improved, suggesting progress in awareness, early detection and access to treatment.

However, lung cancer continues to show significantly poorer outcomes compared to other common cancers. Individuals diagnosed with lung cancer face disproportionately lower survival rates, and this inequity is mirrored in the level of investment and support dedicated to lung cancer care. The number of specialist lung cancer nurses remains limited across Australia, and research continues to lag behind that allocated to prostate, breast and skin cancers.

Whilst improvement in survivorship is promising, lung cancer remains underfunded and under supported despite being one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in Australia.

The launch of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program in 2025 marks a major milestone in lung health. This program is expected to improve early detection and long-term outcomes of those diagnosed with lung cancer, yet its full impact will take time to be realised. In the meantime, increased invest in specialist lung cancer nurses, research, and comprehensive care is essential to address the true burden faced by Australians diagnosed with lung cancer.

Lung Foundation Australia remains committed to driving greater equity in lung cancer care. Through continued support, awareness and policy advocacy, we will continue our work to ensure lung cancer receive the recognition and support it urgently needs. Improving outcomes and care for those diagnosed with lung cancer remains a top priority. The Lung Cancer Scorecard 2025 was made possible with the support of Bristol-Myers Squibb.
