Some people you hear before you see them. Georgia Christie proudly counts herself as one of them.
“I may be vertically challenged, but my god, do I own a set of lungs.”
A Brisbane local with a big voice, a bigger heart, and an even bigger appetite for adventure, Georgia is lacing up her hiking boots for the Larapinta Adventure alongside two of her favourite people (aka Mum and Dad), Chelsea and Riley. Together, they’re taking on the iconic Larapinta Trail to raise awareness and funds for Lung Foundation Australia.
This is more than a physical challenge. It’s about community, courage, and showing up, even when things feel uncomfortable.
Meet Georgia: big energy, bigger heart
Georgia thrives on adventure and on pushing beyond comfort zones.
“Getting out and about, doing adventures like this, and getting comfortable being uncomfortable is what I’m all about.”
Inspired by the words of Ted Lasso: “If you’re comfortable doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong” – Georgia was drawn to the Larapinta Adventure because it brings together likeminded people willing to challenge themselves for a greater cause.
“This is what I like most about Lung Foundation Australia, there’s nothing ‘comfortable’ about living with, or caring for someone living with, a lung illness or cancer. It takes a village.”
For Georgia, this trek is about people coming together, leaning on each other, and creating memories that last long after the blisters fade.
The why: inspired by strength, love and living loud
Georgia’s motivation to fundraise for lung health is deeply personal.
“Two people inspired me to do this: Cam and his daughter, my mate, Chels.”
When Cam was diagnosed with lung cancer, he didn’t retreat. Instead, he showed up by supporting those around him and continuing to live life with colour, humour and courage. Chels did the same.
“Neither of them used it as an excuse to stop living large, to stop bringing colour to a world that can be so beige.”
So when Chels asked Georgia to join the Larapinta Adventure, the answer came instantly.
“There wasn’t even a microsecond of hesitation. Tomorrow is never guaranteed, so yabso‑goddam‑lutely I said yes!”
Georgia, Chels and Riley are taking on the trail in honour of Cam and the Bulley family and in support of everyone impacted by lung disease and lung cancer.
Why fundraising matters
Lung Foundation Australia provides vital support, research, resources and connection for people living with lung disease and lung cancer, and for the families who walk alongside them.
“Fundraising for the Lung Foundation Australia is one of the few things I can do to show my support in standing alongside the Bulley family in their journey with lung cancer.”
For Georgia, every dollar raised is a tangible way to help ensure no one has to face lung illness alone.
Training, type 1 diabetes and tackling the red centre
Georgia is no stranger to a challenge. She’s completed some serious treks, including the 96km Kokoda Challenge, and regularly takes on multi‑day hikes with her dad. Still, she knows the Larapinta Adventure will be something different.
“There’s nothing quite like the red centre to challenge you.”
Living with type 1 diabetes adds another layer to the experience.
“Training for something like this with type 1 is like trying to solve a 1000‑piece puzzle, except it’s missing a piece.”
Even with careful planning, blood glucose levels can be unpredictable, but Georgia embraces that uncertainty as part of the journey.
“Accepting that I only have so much I can control is all part of being comfortable in the uncomfortable… After all, swimming in the deep end (with good company) is more fun anyway!”
One thing Georgia is most excited about? Who she’s sharing the trail with.
“I’m not kidding when I say they’re like my mum and dad, best believe we’re in for some knee‑slapping giggles.”
The trio have tackled challenges together before, and the Larapinta Adventure will be another unforgettable addition to their shared story, full of laughs, grit, and incredible Australian landscapes.
Raising awareness, one BBQ at a time
Georgia, Chels and Riley have been loud (in the best way) about their fundraising efforts. From social media to community events, they were determined to spark meaningful conversations about lung health.
They hosted:
- A Bunnings BBQ on the 20 March
- A Trivia Night on the 21 March
“With our man Cam there amongst the fun.”
Their hope was simple but powerful: to remind people of the gift of breath and to shine a light on the work Lung Foundation Australia continues to do.
“Every cent we raised will help more Australians to breathe easier, live better, and feel less alone.”
Thinking about signing up? Do it.
Georgia has one question for anyone considering the Larapinta Adventure next year:
“What have you got to lose?”
From awareness and advocacy to friendships, research funding, and a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience -Georgia believes there’s only something to gain.
Looking ahead
By the end of this challenge, Georgia hopes to have raised as much as possible through their fundraising events and to give back to the people who’ve supported them along the way.
“I’m going into this challenge with two people who mean the absolute world to me. We’re all in it together, and only unreal experiences are going to come from this.”
If you’d like to be part of Georgia’s journey and support her efforts on the Larapinta Adventure, you can make a donation via her fundraising page. Every contribution helps support Lung Foundation Australia’s vital work and brings us one step closer to a future where everyone can breathe easier.
