Walking for family, hope and change: why Sarah is taking on the Larapinta Adventure

For Sarah, the Larapinta Adventure isn’t just a walk through one of Australia’s most iconic landscapes, it’s a deeply personal journey shaped by love, loss, and a determination to change the story around lung cancer.

By taking on this challenge with Lung Foundation Australia, Sarah is walking for her family, for greater awareness, and for a future where fewer families face the heartbreak she knows all too well.

A personal reason to step forward

Sarah signed up for the Larapinta Adventure because lung cancer has had a devastating impact on her family.

“For me, it’s deeply personal.”

Her uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer in his mid‑40s. He was fit, healthy, and a non‑smoker. Despite everything, he passed away shortly after turning 50, leaving behind his wife and two young daughters. More recently, Sarah’s dad has also been diagnosed with lung cancer, and like her uncle, he has always been fit, healthy, and has never smoked.

“These experiences have shown me just how misunderstood lung cancer can be, and how it can affect anyone – not just those who fit the stereotype.”

Taking part in the Larapinta Adventure is Sarah’s way of honouring her uncle, supporting her dad, and helping raise awareness and funds for research, support and hope for other families facing the same journey.

What lung health awareness means to Sarah

Lung Health Awareness Month holds profound meaning for Sarah.

“It means recognising that lung disease and lung cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness, or smoking history.”

Through her family’s experience, Sarah has seen firsthand how damaging stigma and assumptions can be and how important it is to challenge them.

“Lung health awareness means advocating for earlier diagnosis, better support, and continued research, so fewer families experience the loss and uncertainty that mine has.”

For Sarah, awareness is about turning personal loss into action and into hope for the future.

Training with purpose

Sarah has been training hard in the lead‑up to the walk, balancing her usual gym routine with more frequent walks, including trail walks.

“I would have liked to be a little further with my training, but life has been very busy.”

Mentally, her motivation is unwavering.

“I’m constantly thinking about the battles my uncle and dad have faced – the gruelling treatment, the exhaustion and fatigue after radiotherapy and chemotherapy.”

Those thoughts keep her grounded in resilience and purpose, especially when the training feels tough.

Why she’s walking

Sarah’s message to her supporters and the wider community is clear and heartfelt:

“Lung health matters. Lung cancer and lung disease can affect anyone – even those who are fit, healthy, and have never smoked.”

She has seen the heartbreak this disease can cause. Losing her uncle far too young, and now supporting her dad through his diagnosis, has shown her how real the fear and uncertainty can be.

“No family should have to go through this, and no one should feel judged or alone because of a lung diagnosis.”

That’s why Sarah is walking – to stand with others, to raise awareness, and to help ensure people facing lung disease are met with understanding, support and hope.

“I’m asking people to help change the story.”

By supporting lung health awareness, talking openly about lung disease, and funding research, early detection and vital support services, Sarah believes we can challenge stigma, save lives and give families hope when they need it most.
