Living with pulmonary fibrosis webinar

Living with pulmonary fibrosis webinar

In this video, we hear from John, Vivienne, Marcia and Bob, who share their lived experiences with pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Our speakers talk about managing their condition, their journey to diagnosis, their involvement in clinical trials or research, and their tips for others navigating life with PF/ILD.

Many patients are unaware of their lung condition until diagnosed. Symptoms like breathlessness and persistent coughs were often dismissed as minor issues. Diagnosis typically involves chest x-rays, MRIs, and lung biopsies. The journey can be daunting, however, supportive healthcare teams can provide hope and better management strategies.

Managing Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) often involves dealing with acute exacerbations, which can severely impact physical activities. For instance, stopping activities like swimming and starting to use oxygen. Staying fit through walking and weightlifting became essential to maintain muscle strength.

Living with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is life-changing. It can affect work, income, and daily routines. Treatments can have side effects, such as hair changes and weight loss. It’s crucial to have strong support from family and friends and to take one day at a time and remember to take each day at a time.

Awareness and understanding of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis can be limited and frustrating at times. Educating friends and family about the disease can help garner support. Despite physical limitations, with planning, one can still enjoy life. Side effects from medications are common, but maintaining a positive outlook is vital.

Clinical trials offer hope and understanding of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Participating in trials can provide valuable knowledge and reduced feelings of isolation. It’s important to advocate for better GP education and early diagnosis to improve patient outcomes.

For newly diagnosed patients, being open about the disease, establishing trust with specialist treating teams, and connecting with support groups are essential steps.
