For Carnedd Williams, the Larapinta Adventure is more than a physical challenge, it’s a natural extension of a lifelong commitment to improving access to healthcare and changing outcomes for people living with lung disease.
Based in Perth, Carnedd is the Chief Operating Officer of TiBi Healthcare. This year, he’s stepping into the Red Centre to raise funds and awareness for Lung Foundation Australia, combining purpose, advocacy and endurance along one of Australia’s most iconic trails.
Meet Carnedd: A commitment shaped by experience
Originally from rural Wales, Carnedd understands firsthand what it means to live without easy access to healthcare services, an experience that continues to influence how he thinks about healthcare delivery today.
“What I value most about Lung Foundation Australia is their commitment to advocacy, education, and driving meaningful change in lung health outcomes across Australia.”
He’s particularly drawn to Lung Foundation Australia’s focus on conditions that are often under‑recognised, especially in regional and remote communities – an approach that strongly aligns with TiBi Healthcare’s mission.
“At TiBi, our focus is on improving access to early detection and preventative care, particularly for lung disease, so there is a very natural alignment between our mission and the work Lung Foundation Australia leads nationally.”
Why the Larapinta Adventure matters
For Carnedd, signing up for the Larapinta Adventure was both a personal and professional decision.
“Through my work, I’ve seen firsthand how lung disease can develop silently over years – particularly in workers exposed to dust and environmental hazards – and how late diagnosis can significantly impact outcomes.”
When he discovered the Larapinta Adventure through Lung Foundation Australia, it stood out as more than just a trek.
“It’s an opportunity to contribute to awareness, advocacy and real impact, while being part of a community that genuinely cares about improving lung health outcomes.”
Lung Health Awareness Month, for Carnedd, is about shifting the narrative.
“It’s about moving from reactive treatment to proactive, early detection and prevention. That’s where we can make the biggest difference.”
Why fundraising is so important
Fundraising for Lung Foundation Australia is something Carnedd sees as essential because early detection can change lives.
“Their work directly supports better outcomes for people who are often diagnosed too late.”
At TiBi Healthcare, early detection is central to everything they do – identifying disease at a stage where it can be managed, treated, or even prevented from progressing.
“We operate mobile diagnostic units, including low‑dose CT capability, to bring screening directly to workers and communities – particularly those who would otherwise face significant barriers to access.”
Supporting Lung Foundation Australia is a natural extension of this work, with advocacy, research and education playing a critical role alongside on‑the‑ground services.
Taking on the trail with purpose
What Carnedd is most looking forward to on the Larapinta Trail is the opportunity to step away from the day‑to‑day and reconnect with purpose.
“There’s something powerful about combining a physical challenge with a meaningful cause – it creates space to reflect on why this work matters.”
His preparation has been focused and intentional:
- Consistent training to build endurance
- Mental discipline to stay committed
- Purpose‑driven motivation to keep the cause front of mind
“The most rewarding part so far has been knowing that every step is contributing to something bigger than just the trek itself.”
Raising awareness where it’s needed most
Carnedd hopes his participation helps reinforce a simple but critical message: lung disease doesn’t need to be detected late.
Through both his work at TiBi Healthcare and his involvement in the Larapinta Adventure, Carnedd is passionate about:
- Increasing awareness of occupational and environmental lung disease
- Highlighting the importance of regular screening and monitoring
- Reducing barriers to access, particularly in regional and remote communities
“Access remains one of the biggest challenges in Australia and that’s why mobile solutions and strong advocacy from organisations like Lung Foundation Australia are so important.”
For anyone considering the Larapinta Adventure in future, his advice is clear: do it. It’s a chance to challenge yourself, be part of a supportive community, and contribute to something that truly matters.
And to the broader community?
“Take lung health seriously. Early detection can change outcomes and in many cases, save lives.”
Looking ahead
By the end of this challenge, Carnedd hopes to achieve two things: to complete the Larapinta Trail knowing he’s fully committed to the challenge, and to contribute, in a meaningful way, to improving lung health outcomes across Australia.
“This challenge is simply another way of living our mission, outside of the day‑to‑day work, and contributing to a broader movement that is driving real change.”
You can be part of this journey. By donating to Carnedd’s fundraising page, you’re directly supporting Lung Foundation Australia’s vital work in advocacy, education, research and support, helping ensure more Australians benefit from early detection and better access to care.
Every donation makes a difference.
