Research grants and awards

Sections on this page

In collaboration with professional societies, research institutions and other peak bodies, Lung Foundation Australia delivers a competitive and peer-reviewed grants and awards program. The program aims to support Australia’s best new and mid-career researchers in the areas of lung health research. Through seed funding, we’re helping to further innovative research projects across many areas. Our goal is to deliver better outcomes to help change the lives of people with lung disease and lung cancer.

Our program finds and encourages new research projects for all types of lung diseases and lung cancer. This research helps us to:

  • Understand more about why different lung diseases and lung cancer happen, how common they are, and how they affect people.
  • Develop new ways to diagnose lung diseases and new treatment options.
  • Improve outcomes and the quality of life for people with lung disease and lung cancer.

Types of research grants and awards

We offer several types of grants and awards to help researchers come together to discuss their ideas and share them with Australia and the world.

  • Fellowships and PhD scholarships: to support individual researchers
  • Project grants and awards: to provide money for individuals, teams or specific research projects
  • Travel grants: to help researchers attend respiratory and lung cancer conferences to support their career growth through professional development opportunities.

If you’re a researcher who wants to apply for funding, you can read our grants and awards policy and look for upcoming opportunities to apply.

The Hope Research Fund

Since April 2021, our Hope Research Fund has invested in critically important research for lung disease and lung cancer. We have an ambitious goal to raise $50 million by 2030!

With this fund, we can help improve the lives of the 1 in 3 Australians who have lung disease or lung cancer. The funds go towards top researchers who are working on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cures.

We’re able to do all this thanks to help from industry, private partners, and supporters in our community. Every year, we share a report that shows how much progress we’re making in funding life-changing research. Take a look at our latest report.

Celebrating research excellence

Each year, we recognise excellence in the field of lung health and celebrate the recipients of the Hope Research Awards and Grants at our yearly Hope Research Fund Dinner.

If you’re a researcher and have questions, you can email our Hope Research Program team at research@lungfoundation.com.au.

By investing in innovative research, Lung Foundation Australia continues to make a difference and give hope to people living with lung disease and lung cancer.
