Growing up, your dad feels invincible. Brooke learned differently when her father Grahame was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Grahame was diagnosed in February and Brooke says due to being based in regional NSW there was delays in the diagnosis.
“Because of where my parents live there wasn’t access to certain services,” she said.
“Dad had been unwell for a while and I think he knew in himself long before he was diagnosed.
“He lost his dad and sister to lung cancer. It was devastating to hear how aggressive his diagnosis was.”
Brooke said her dad had only recently retired when he was diagnosed.
“He has always been a strong, active and busy man. Could never sit still and didn’t know how to rest,” she said.
“He was starting to enjoy fishing trips with mum, had found a new love for baking and cooking and spending time with his grandchildren.

“Seeing my dad change since being diagnosed is hard. Yet he continues to face it with so much tenacity, grace and humour. He is an inspiration.”
Inspired to be a superhero for her Dad
An inspiration that has sparked the idea for Brooke to raise $10,000 for Lung Foundation Australia and shave her hair in late August.
“I have felt helpless as a bystander while my dad goes through such big changes. I wanted to do something that might make him feel seen and less alone.”
At the time of chatting to Brooke, her GoFundMe is at 69% of her $10,000 goal.
“It’s excruciating to watch your loved one deteriorate. Lung cancer does not discriminate and can affect anyone at any time.”
The funds raised will directly support life-changing support services, advocacy & education programs as well as fostering groundbreaking research.
