Lung Foundation Australia, alongside passionate consumer advocates, worked for many years to champion the introduction of a National Lung Cancer Screening Program. This advocacy work included engaging with the Government, health experts and community to highlight the critical importance of lung cancer screening and early detection.
Lung Foundation Australia published a formal report advocating for lung cancer screening in Australia and introduced the Lung Cancer Blueprint: The Next Breathe, calling on the Australian Government to fund and implement a targeted national program.
Lung Foundation Australia continues to play an important role in the program by supporting people to access the program, develop resources for priority populations and increase knowledge and awareness among healthcare professionals through online modules and webinars.
Supporting priority populations access the program
Lung Foundation Australia was contracted by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing to lead a national consultation project focused on understanding the barriers and enablers to participation in the National Lung Cancer Screening Program among priority populations.
In partnership with peak bodies, Lung Foundation Australia continues to work with priority populations to tailor existing program resources and develop new resources to support awareness and engagement for these groups. LFA are tailoring and developing resources for people:
- living in rural and remote areas
- living with disability
- from multicultural communities
- in the LGBTIQA+ community
- experiencing mental health challenges.
Lung Cancer Screening Helpline
Lung Foundation Australia has established the Lung Cancer Screening Helpline, funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. The helpline expands on Lung Foundation Australia’s existing lung health information and support services. Staffed by trained nurses, the service provides guidance, information and support throughout the program.
