Community events will honour loved ones, support people living with lung cancer and raise funds for research and practical support
Lung Foundation Australia is inviting Australians to come together this November for Shine a Light on Lung Cancer, a series of community events recognising everyone affected by lung cancer.
People living with lung cancer, their families and friends, and anyone wishing to honour someone they have lost are welcome. Community hosts will bring people together to share stories, remember loved ones and show that no one has to face lung cancer alone.
More than 15,000 Australians were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2025 and sadly more than 9,000 people died. Lung cancer remains Australia’s leading cause of cancer death. One in four people diagnosed with lung cancer survives five years.
Lung Foundation Australia CEO Mark Brooke said Shine a Light creates a welcoming space for people to connect while helping fund progress for the lung cancer community.
“Lung cancer affects people from all walks of life, and its impact reaches far beyond the person diagnosed,” Mr Brooke said.
“Shine a Light gives people a chance to remember someone they love, stand alongside people living with lung cancer and connect with others who understand. Funds raised also help support vital research and practical support for patients and families.”
The community hosts taking part reflect the many ways lung cancer touches lives. In Brisbane, Anne is hosting while living with lung cancer herself. She describes Shine a Light as “a safe space for everyone to feel supported and truly know that they are not alone.”
“I feel a real sense of pride knowing I am part of a community that cares so deeply and has no judgement,” Anne said.
In Kingscliff, Bev is hosting in memory of her son Matthew, who died from lung cancer at the age of 38.
“I wanted to find a way to honour my son and help others who are suffering from lung cancer,” she said.
“My son couldn’t be saved, so my wish is that by raising money we can help give people with lung cancer access to more targeted treatments and a better chance of long-term survival.”
Erin, who hosts in Largs Bay, is honouring her mum, who died after being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
“Shine a Light reminds people that absolutely anyone can get lung cancer,” she said.
