This fact sheet from Lung Foundation Australia has been designed to help people living with Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) to understand more about the immunosuppressant medication, Azathioprine (Imuran).
Azathioprine is used to reduce inflammation in the lungs, which can lead to fibrosis or scarring. By decreasing inflammation, azathioprine may prevent further lung fibrosis and, in some cases, help inflamed lungs return to normal.
Before taking azathioprine, it is important to inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to azathioprine or any other medications, and to disclose all other medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
Azathioprine is generally not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, so it is crucial to consult your doctor if you are or plan to become pregnant. Additionally, you should notify your doctor if you have any infections, or a history of kidney or liver disease, or skin cancer. It is also important to inform medical professionals that you are taking azathioprine if you are having surgery.
When starting azathioprine, your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage, which is usually taken once or twice daily and adjusted over time. Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor for side effects, including low blood cell counts and abnormal liver function. Patients should also have regular check-ups with their healthcare provider to monitor lung function and overall health.
Common side effects include abdominal pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, dizziness, muscle aches, mouth sores, and changes in taste or smell. Serious side effects, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or allergic reactions, require immediate medical attention.
For detailed guidance on side effects and safety precautions, consult the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet and consult your healthcare provider. For more information about PF visit Lung Foundation Australia’s website www.lungfoundation.com.au
