Better living with exercise (booklet)

Exercise plays an important role in both your physical and mental health. It is widely recognised that exercise improves your wellbeing and can help to reduce symptoms such as breathlessness. It is important to keep your body moving and maintain exercise habits.

Better Living with Exercise – Your Personal Guide was developed by an expert team of health professionals and community representatives to allow people living with a chronic lung disease or lung cancer to work with their treating accredited exercise physiologist or physiotherapist to develop the most suitable exercise program based on their condition, goals and interests.

This user-friendly guide compliments our suite of existing information and resources within the exercise area. It aims to be an important tool to build motivation, develop goals and allow for a safe progression towards positive health outcomes with their exercise professional supporting them along the way.

The Better Living with Exercise booklet has been developed to enable an accredited exercise physiologist or physiotherapist to input personalised exercises and includes:

  • instructional exercise images and descriptions,
  • comprehensive information on the components of exercise and its safety,
  • details and support on how to develop a plan, and
  • log sheets to track and monitor progress.

This booklet can be purchased in hardcopy at the Lung Foundation shop here.

In Australia, there are personalised hospital, telehealth, home-based and community exercise programs available for people living with a chronic lung disease or lung cancer, such as pulmonary rehabilitation and Lungs in Action. These programs are the safest and best way to exercise for people living with lung disease or lung cancer. They include tailored exercise and self-management programs prescribed by a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist and you will complete a pre- and post-assessment to determine your eligibility to attend these programs. Talk to your healthcare professional about whether these exercise programs are right for you.
