Choosing the right inhaler

Choosing the right inhaler

Choosing the right inhaler device is an important treatment decision for healthcare professionals prescribing medications for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases. The type of inhaler prescribed can have a significant impact on how well a person can use their inhaler device, how effective the treatment is, and ultimately how well their condition is managed. This inhaler selection resource has been developed to help consumers and clinicians work together to make informed choices about the most suitable device to prescribe, taking into account what’s most important to the consumer, their preferences and needs.

This practical resource encourages open discussion between patients and their healthcare team by considering individual needs, abilities, and preferences. It guides conversations about:

  • How someone breathes (quick and deep vs. slow and steady)
  • Their hand strength and coordination
  • Ease of use
  • Device size and portability
  • Environmental impact
  • Cost.

By working through the checklist together, clinicians and patients can weigh up the advantages and limitations of each device type — including dry powder inhalers, metered-dose inhalers (with or without spacers), breath-actuated devices, and soft mist inhalers.

The tool also empowers patients by prompting them to reflect on what matters most to them and to ask questions such as: Can I try out the device? Will I be shown how to use it correctly? Can I change it later if it doesn’t suit me? This shared-care approach ensures the chosen inhaler is not only clinically appropriate but also practical and acceptable for everyday use.

By embedding consumer preferences and shared decision-making into the prescribing process, the tool promotes adherence, improves confidence, and helps people feel more in control of their lung health. For healthcare professionals, it is a valuable aid to support evidence-based prescribing and to strengthen the partnership between patients and their care teams.
