Cost-of-living pressures with a lung condition: Measures to ease pressures and promote health

Lung Foundation Australia’s 2024 report, Cost-of-Living Pressures with a Lung Condition, highlights the significant financial challenges faced by Australians living with lung disease or lung cancer. The report presents findings from a comprehensive survey of over 700 individuals living with a lung disease, conducted in January 2024.

The survey reveals that nearly one in four respondents reported a major or severe impact on their ability to manage their lung health due to cost-of-living pressures. Additionally, more than three in four respondents noted increased out-of-pocket healthcare costs, which have become a substantial burden. The report outlines how cost-of-living pressures are forcing many to delay or forgo essential health care, including medical appointments, allied health services, and diagnostic tests.

To address these challenges, Lung Foundation Australia recommends six key areas for action:

  1. Cheaper medicines, equipment and vaccinations
  2. Affordable medical appointments and community-based care
  3. Accessible allied health and mental health support
  4. Reduced out-of-pocket costs for tests and scans
  5. Support to address travel-related health care barriers
  6. Broader system-level strategies to reduce poverty and improve affordability

This report is essential reading for policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups seeking to understand and address the intersection between current cost-of-living pressures and lung disease. It underscores the urgent need for equitable healthcare access and financial relief for vulnerable Australians.

The report outlines Lung Foundation Australia’s key findings and recommendations for promoting health and wellbeing for people living with lung disease amidst high cost-of-living pressures. Lung Foundation Australia are committed to advocating for policy changes that prioritise lung health and reduce the financial strain on affected individuals.
