The Lung Foundation Australia (LFA) Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse Model of Care provides a national framework to guide advanced practice nursing for people affected by lung cancer. Grounded in evidence and patient-centred principles, it defines the specialist lung cancer nursing role across the entire continuum of care – from pre-diagnosis and diagnosis through active treatment, survivorship, and end of life.
The model recognises that lung cancer care is complex and often fragmented, requiring specialist nurses who can coordinate care, provide expert clinical and psychosocial support, and advocate for timely investigations and treatment. It highlights the unique and evolving needs of people with lung cancer and their families at each stage of the pathway, along with key nursing considerations, interventions, and competencies relevant to those stages.
The Model of Care promotes consistency and excellence in specialist nursing practice across Australia, regardless of care setting or funding structure. While it underpins the LFA-funded Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse positions, it is relevant to any nurse providing care for people with suspected or confirmed lung cancer, in both metropolitan and regional settings.
By articulating best-practice standards and demonstrating the value of specialist nursing, the LFA Model of Care supports health services, policy makers, and clinicians to deliver equitable, coordinated, and person-centred lung cancer care nationwide.
