This fact sheet has been designed to help people living with Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) to understand more about the antifibrotic medication, Pirfenidone. Pirfenidone is used to treat PF by slowing down the build-up of scar tissue in the lungs.
Before starting pirfenidone, it is crucial to inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, allergies, and all other medications or supplements you are taking. This includes prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. Additionally, discuss any plans for pregnancy or breastfeeding with your doctor.
When starting pirfenidone, your doctor will provide specific instructions on dosage and timing. Typically, the medication is taken three times a day with food, and the dose is gradually increased over the first few weeks.
Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor your response and adjust the dosage if needed. Patients should also have regular check-ups with their healthcare provider to monitor lung function and overall health.
Common side effects of pirfenidone include skin reactions such as sunburn or rash, or digestive issues such as changes in taste, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or constipation can also occur. Other side effects may include headache, dizziness, muscle and joint pain, and difficulty sleeping.
Serious side effects, though uncommon, require immediate medical attention and include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, and unusual bleeding or bruising. Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor liver function and other potential side effects, with monthly checks for the first three to six months. Your lung function will also be monitored over time to track the progress of your condition.
For more detailed information, patients should refer to the full Consumer Medicine Information leaflet and consult their healthcare provider. For information about living with PF visit Lung Foundation Australia’s website www.lungfoundation.com.au
