Lung Foundation Australia’s 2024 Cost-of-Living Survey Technical Report presents comprehensive data on how rising living costs are affecting Australians living with lung conditions, including COPD, lung cancer, and rare lung diseases. Based on responses from 703 individuals across all states and territories, the report offers critical insights into the health and financial challenges faced by this vulnerable population.
Key findings reveal that over 80% of respondents were impacted by cost-of-living pressures in the past year. Respondents described worsening mental and physical health, and having to make difficult choices between healthcare and basic needs.
The report details how cost pressures have led to:
- 40% cutting back on allied health services
- 30% cancelling or delaying GP visits
- 24% cancelling or delaying specialist appointments
- 18% skipping tests or scans
- 14% using out-of-date medications
Respondents also reported increased out-of-pocket costs for health care and reduced affordability of essentials like food, utilities, and transport.
Survey participants identified key supports needed to relieve cost burdens, including:
- Cheaper medicines and medical equipment
- More bulk-billed appointments
- Reduced costs for tests and scans
- Improved access to telehealth and travel subsidies
This technical report provides valuable lived experience insights for policymakers, health professionals, and advocacy groups aiming to improve healthcare affordability and access for people with lung disease.
