Understanding your diagnosis
Learning about your diagnosis is a big step, and we want to help make it as clear as possible. We’ll guide you through understanding bronchiectasis and what practical steps you can take next.
Prepare for your doctor’s visit
- Write down any questions you have
- Think about bringing a family member or friend. They can offer support, help you remember details and ask questions you might not think of.
Your doctor or specialist will work with you to create a treatment plan that’s right for you. They’ll also help you build a management plan for you to help manage your symptoms and daily life.
My bronchiectasis checklist
This checklist is a great way to help you manage your bronchiectasis with your treating healthcare team. Run through this checklist with your GP or specialist to talk about your diagnosis and care plan.
The checklist covers important topics like:
- Diagnosis
- Action plans
- Airway clearance
- Vaccinations
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Exercise
- Diet
- Mental health
- Quitting smoking.
It’s also important to get the right support after your diagnosis. This often means meeting with other health professionals who can help you manage your daily life with bronchiectasis.
You can do many things to improve your quality of life. You don’t have to figure it out alone. Support from experts in nutrition, mental health, sleep and exercise can make a real difference.
Asking your doctor for a referral to a respiratory physiotherapist is a good idea. They can work with you to find an airway clearance plan suited to you and teach you techniques to keep your lungs as healthy as possible.
Take time to process
Being diagnosed with bronchiectasis can bring up many feelings. You might feel confused, frustrated or even relieved to finally have an answer. It’s important to take time to adjust and understand your diagnosis, what it means for you now, and what it might mean for the future. Everyone reacts differently and there’s no right or wrong way to feel. It’s also important to look out for your mental health at this time. Take a look at our resources below for an introduction to bronchiectasis, or read our blog for more information about coming to terms with your diagnosis.
