Treatable Traits: Breathlessness

Hear from our panel of chronic lung disease and breathlessness experts on the symptoms-based, treatable traits approach to identifying and managing breathlessness in clinical practice. Dr Hayley Lewthwaite will discuss the diverse dimensions, physiological and psychological drivers of breathlessness, as well as different tools for supporting different contexts. Ms Mary Roberts will draw on her clinical experience and research interests in breathlessness, sharing insights on optimising communication and coping strategies, as well as practical tips to support self-management.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify the physiological and psychological manifestations of breathlessness
  • Discuss evidence-based approaches to identifying and assessing breathlessness in clinical practice
  • Describe steps to communicating effectively with patients arounds breathlessness support and coping strategies
  • Discuss practical tips to support patients in self-management of breathlessness

Dr Hayley Lewthwaite

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Treatable Traits

Dr Hayley Lewthwaite is an accredited exercise physiologist and postdoctoral research fellow in the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Treatable Traits. Hayley’s research aims to improve how breathlessness is assessed and managed for people with chronic lung disease. This includes optimising breathlessness assessment approaches, to help patients communicate, and clinicians understand, the true daily life symptom experience. Further, Hayley’s research focuses on improving breathlessness management so that people who live with disabling breathlessness can exercise for longer at higher intensities to obtain maximal health benefits, and be more active in their day-to-day life.

Ms Mary Roberts

Respiratory Clinical Nurse Consultant
Westmead Hospital

Mary Roberts is a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Consultant working at Westmead Hospital. She has 30 years of experience working in Respiratory Medicine. She is an active member of the Lung Foundation of Australia and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand where she is currently on the NSW Executive. Mary is a keen clinician researcher and has presented her work both nationally and internationally. Her research interests include Breathlessness, COPD, ILD and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Mrs Colleen Mcgoldrick

Master of Nurse Practitioner in Chronic Disease Management
Central Queensland University

Colleen’s nursing career has spanned 32 years in the UK and Australia. She became a Nurse Practitioner in 2008 and transitioned into academia in 2014.Her role involves teaching nursing students across the 3 year curriculum, writing and designing units, assessing in clinical units and managing all levels of student nurses. Colleen’s research interests are in chronic illness. COPD, primary care, and teaching.
