Lung Foundation Australia is aware of reports that several Canberra schools have temporarily closed or adjusted operations following the discovery of decorative coloured sand containing trace amounts of chrysotile, a naturally occurring mineral sometimes found in the environment. We understand families may feel concerned, and we want to reassure parents and carers that the current risk to children is considered very low.
In situations like this, health risks generally arise only when asbestos fibres become airborne and are inhaled. The sand involved is typically used in ways that keep it intact, meaning the likelihood of fibres becoming airborne is extremely small. If any parent or carer is still worried about possible contact, speaking with their GP can provide additional reassurance.
We acknowledge the ACCC’s recall of the affected products and support ongoing steps to identify and safely manage any remaining materials. Lung Foundation Australia will continue to monitor the situation and provide clear, evidence-based guidance to the community as more information becomes available.
For families who have any concerns or questions, please call our Lung Health Helpline on 1800 654 301.
