Australia’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program has launched but Lung Foundation Australia’s 2025 Lung Cancer Scorecard shows there’s more to be done create better lung health for all.
Lung Foundation Australia’s CEO Mark Brooke said the 2025 scorecard shows we need to do more about raising awareness of lung cancer in Australia.
“It is concerning that our country’s biggest cancer killer still receives less research funding than breast and prostate cancers,” he said.
“The lung cancer screening program will save 12,000 lives over the 10 years. To give these patients the gold standard of care they deserve, we need more specialist lung cancer nursers and more research funding. These are two areas where we see lung cancer continually lag behind Australia’s other common cancers.”
Brooke said states and territories needed to step up and commit to fund further Specialist Lung Cancer Nurses.
“The more we invest in these areas the closer we get to giving every one of the 15,122 people diagnosed with lung cancer1 the best possible care by having at least 100 specialist nurses nation-wide to ensure more people living with lung cancer are able to access this important service.”
To play a part in raising much needed funds to offer hope to those living with lung cancer and their families, Lung Foundation Australia is calling on Australians to join their annual Shine a Light on lung cancer fundraising walks in November.
“At the moment, only around 11% of people are diagnosed in the crucial early stages in Australia,” Brooke said.
“We want to set our sights on increasing diagnoses made at Stage 1 to 50% in the next 2 years and the money we raise during Shine a Light this year will help us invest in research and projects that will get us closer to this goal.”
People can get involved with this year’s Shine a Light by registering to attend their local walk and fundraising to receive one of three lanterns depending on if they are walking to remember a loved one, living with lung cancer or showing support for the lung cancer community.
Register online to host a walk, join an event, fundraise or donate or call 1800 654 301 (option 1).
