Centre of Research Excellence in Pulmonary Fibrosis (CRE-PF)
The Centre of Research Excellence in Pulmonary Fibrosis (CRE-PF) helps build more research capacity to improve and extend the lives of people with PF. The CRE-PF was started in 2017 with funding from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
The CRE-PF enables a nationally coordinated, cutting-edge, research program. This program focuses on finding better, personalised ways to find and manage fibrotic lung diseases. The CRE-PF also contributes to educating the public about PF and training future researchers. The CREATE (CRE-Advanced Training Environment) offers a unique opportunity for students and healthcare professionals in the area of ILD research.
Research grants and awards
Lung Foundation Australia’s awards and grants program works with the Centre of Research Excellence in Pulmonary Fibrosis (CRE-PF) through the CREATE program to help early or mid-career PF researchers in their career development. These grants support new, innovative research projects that will ultimately lead to:
- A better understanding of what causes PF, how many people have it, and its impact
- New ways to diagnose and treat PF
- Better outcomes and quality of life for people living with the disease.
These opportunities include:
- Fellowships and PhD scholarships
- Grants and awards
We also offer travel grants each year. These allow researchers to collaborate with others and showcase their work in Australia and overseas. We help research move from new discoveries to real-life patient care by offering awards that cover many different healthcare roles.

Australasian ILD registry (AILDR)
The Australasian ILD registry (AILDR) collects information from patients with all types of ILD across Australia and New Zealand. This helps us to:
- Have a great resource for high-quality ILD research
- Improve care for ILD patients across Australia and New Zealand.
Pulmonary Fibrosis Australasian Clinical Trials (PACT) network
The PF Australasian Clinical Trials (PACT) network is a group of passionate and dedicated specialists. They work to create and run clinical trials that will improve outcomes for people with PF.
PACT’s goal is to make sure people with PF, their families, and healthcare professionals know about and can access the latest clinical trial information and the newest advances in treatment.
Australian IPF registry
The Australian Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) registry was finalised in 2022 after 10 successful years. This important research platform supported many projects, leading to published research on topics including:
- How common IPF is and what causes it
- Signs that help predict how IPF might progress, including special biomarkers and using AI with high-resolution CT scans
- The economics of and costs involved with IPF healthcare
- Genetic studies related to IPF.
The research from the registry data has helped us better understand the complex disease of IPF. This has led to improved ways to manage the disease and better outcomes for people living with IPF.
This unique research platform, with its large amount of data, high-resolution CT scans, and blood samples, is still available for research. The AILDR team now manages it.
