The “Mind Matters” webinar, hosted by Lung Foundation Australia, introduces their new mental health hub. The session features Tracy Story, an experienced social worker and counselor, who will guide participants through practices of self-compassion and mindfulness. Tracy has extensive experience working with individuals with chronic health conditions, particularly those affecting the lungs. She emphasizes the importance of mental health, especially during COVID-19 restrictions, and explains how chronic health issues can lead to high tension and impact self-perception and relationships.
Tracy defines mindfulness as a state of mind involving intention, attention, and attitude, and highlights its benefits in managing stress and promoting well-being. She references Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness and encourages participants to practice being present and non-judgmental. Tracy also introduces the concept of self-compassion, noting that people often find it easier to be compassionate towards others than themselves. She encourages participants to reflect on what compassion means to them and emphasizes the importance of being kind to oneself, especially when dealing with chronic health conditions.
The webinar includes a mini practice session and introduces a series of five videos designed specifically for people with respiratory and lung conditions. These practices have received positive feedback, even from those initially skeptical. The session aims to provide practical tools for incorporating mindfulness and self-compassion into daily life, helping individuals manage their mental health and well-being.
