Lungs in Action Participant-Eligibility-Criteria

This factsheet for health professionals outlines the eligibility criteria for the Lungs in Action program, a safe and supportive community-based exercise initiative designed for people living with stable chronic lung or heart conditions. Its primary goal is to help participants maintain the physical and functional improvements achieved through recent pulmonary or cardiac rehabilitation. To be eligible, individuals must have completed a rehabilitation program within the last six months and be in stable health. Lungs in Action is suitable for people with chronic lung diseases such as COPD, bronchiectasis, asthma, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, and lung transplant recipients. It also supports people with heart conditions including stable heart failure (NYHA Class I–III), those recently discharged from hospital following major cardiac events or surgeries, and patients with stable coronary artery disease post-angioplasty or stenting, subject to medical clearance. Participants must be able to mobilise independently, with or without a walking aid, and those requiring supplemental oxygen are welcome to attend provided they bring their own equipment. Lungs in Action classes provide a structured environment led by specially trained instructors to encourage ongoing physical activity and social connection—key components for long-term health maintenance. However, people with unstable medical conditions, such as uncontrolled heart failure, severe pulmonary hypertension, or symptomatic blood pressure drops during exercise, should not participate. The program is part of Lung Foundation Australia’s commitment to improving quality of life for Australians with lung disease and heart conditions. It bridges the gap between hospital-based rehabilitation and long-term community-based care, encouraging safe, consistent exercise habits that reduce hospital readmissions and support better health outcomes. For those searching for chronic lung disease exercise programs or post-rehabilitation support in Australia, Lungs in Action offers a clinically endorsed and widely accessible pathway to ongoing fitness, independence, and improved wellbeing.
