Vaccinations for People with COPD

Vaccinations for People with COPD

Our 2024 Adult Vaccination Survey received responses from 321 Australians living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Over 40% said they would like to receive information about the vaccinations recommended for them through a consultation with their GP. Many also said they were happy to discuss vaccination with a pharmacist.

This vaccination checklist is designed for people living with COPD to use in discussions with their GP or healthcare team. It can be printed out and taken to an appointment or shown on a smart device – its purpose is to spark conversation. The checklist focuses on six infections for which vaccination is recommended—or may be considered—for people living with COPD.

The six infections are COVID-19, influenza, pneumococcal disease, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), shingles, and whooping cough (pertussis).

For each of the six infections, the checklist provides:

  • A piece of relevant research evidence, and
  • The general adult vaccination recommendation from the Australian Immunisation Handbook—the national clinical guideline that advises health professionals on the safest and most effective use of vaccines.

The cost of vaccination for people living with COPD varies depending on the vaccine and a person’s age. As of December 2025, pneumococcal vaccines for non–First Nations people aged under 70 with COPD (and under 50 for First Nations) are not free, despite being clinically recommended. Lung Foundation Australia continues to advocate for this to change.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccination is not currently free for older Australians; however, we hope it may become so soon. Whooping cough boosters are only free for pregnant women. People who are not eligible for free vaccines can purchase them and private health insurance extras cover may help subsidise the cost.

Lung Foundation Australia work to make sure that Australians living with a lung disease are treated as a priority population for vaccination.
