Interstitial lung disease (ILD) comprises more than 200 heterogeneous lung conditions, characterised by inflammation and/or fibrosis of the lung parenchyma. Diagnosis and management can be complex, requiring a multidisciplinary approach to achieve a diagnosis and develop an individualised treatment plan.
Disease-directed treatment varies according to ILD subtype and may include immunosuppressive therapies and anti-fibrotic agents in the case of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF). Many patients require complex medication regimens. Pharmacists play a key role in supporting people with ILD by facilitating access to therapy, optimising medication management, minimising adverse effects and improving adherence to evidence-based treatment.
