Autohaler

Sections on this page

The Autohaler is a type of pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI). This means the inhaler contains medicine in a canister with a propellant, a type of gas.

The Autohaler is breath-actuated. This means you need to take a slow, steady breath in to release a “puff” of medicine as a fine mist.

Learn how to correctly use an Autohaler by watching the video or following the steps below.

Steps for using the Autohaler

  1. Remove cap
  1. Hold inhaler upright and shake well
  1. Push lever up
  1. Breathe out slowly and gently, away from the inhaler until your lungs feel empty
  1. Put mouthpiece between teeth without biting and close lips to form good seal
  1. Breathe in slowly and deeply; keep breathing in after hearing click
  1. Hold breath for about 5-10 seconds or as long as comfortable
  1. While holding breath, remove inhaler from mouth
  1. Breathe out gently, away from inhaler
  1. Push lever down
  1. If an extra dose is needed, repeat steps 2 to 10
  2. Replace cap

When is the Autohaler empty?

The Autohaler does not have a dose counter. You can keep track of how many doses you’ve used by marking it on a calendar or using a dose-tracking app.

When the inhaler is working, you will hear a click and feel a burst of air when you inhale (step 6).

The inhaler is empty when you do not hear or feel anything when you try to take a dose.

If it’s not time for a new inhaler yet, but you do not hear or feel anything when you try to take a dose, it could mean you have trouble inhaling deeply or strongly enough. If this happens, ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist to check your inhaler technique. They can help make sure you are getting the full benefit from your medicine.

How do I clean and store the Autohaler?

Clean your inhaler mouthpiece with a clean, dry tissue before replacing the cover.

Store in a cool dry place below 30⁰C.

Check the expiration date on your medicine. Ask your pharmacist how to safely get rid of any medicine you don’t need.

If you have any questions about using this inhaler, talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Your inhaler will come with instructions. Always read these instructions for important information on how to use it.
