Self management and pulmonary fibrosis

Join Lung Foundation Australia, Dr John Mackintosh (Respiratory and Lung Transplant Physician) and John Price (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) patient advocate) for the Self-Management and Pulmonary Fibrosis webinar. This webinar draws on both clinical and personal perspectives on how to manage Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis so you can gain a deeper understanding and live your best life. The management strategies discussed include education and information, lifestyle, vaccination, symptom management and managing other conditions.

Some key facts that are explored include lifestyle and diet and exercise. It is beneficial to have a holistic approach to living with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, starting with nutrition and ensuring a balanced diet. During this webinar, patient advocate, John, shares that he finds swimming beneficial for his lungs and chest muscles and enjoys walking in nature. He explains that it is important that patients carry all necessary medications and exercise gear when travelling and exercising. He feels that regular medical appointments are essential, including visits to the GP and specialist for lung function tests and health discussions. It is important to avoid people with colds and flu where possible to prevent infections.

Patients also share their experience with the emotional impact of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, including feelings of anger, anxiety, and depression. It is important to stay positive and find reasons to live, such as spending time with close-knit family and keeping busy with advocacy work.

Dr. John Mackintosh, a respiratory and lung transplant physician, discusses the importance of education and knowledge in managing pulmonary fibrosis. He stressed the need for patients to empower themselves with information, ask questions, and take notes during medical appointments. Dr. Mackintosh highlighted the role of lifestyle factors, such as nutrition and exercise, in managing the disease. He encouraged patients to seek information from reliable sources and involve their support network in their journey.
