Lung Foundation Australia has a strong working relationship with the Government and are looking forward to working with the Albanese government who won their second term at the weekend.
We have played an important role in initiatives that support the lung health of Australians including the milestone National Lung Cancer Screening Program that will launch in July this year and the strong evidence-based stance on vaping.
Lung Foundation Australia’s Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse program was initially supported by the Albanese Government in 2020 and we will continue our work with the Government to advocate for policies and programs that strengthen the lung health of all Australians.
We look forward to working with the incoming Government and Minister to progress Lung Foundation Australia’s election priorities including:
- Reducing the pressure on the Australian health system by investing in Lung Foundation Australia’s Respiratory Care Program
- Reducing inequities in the biggest cause of cancer death in Australia by investing in Specialist Lung Cancer Nurses and the National Lung Cancer Screening Program
- Ensuring high quality training for primary healthcare professionals by investing in Australia’s best-practice lung health education and training program in primary care
- Reducing the burden of chronic diseases in a cost-effect way by increasing investment in preventive healthy, towards 5% of the health budget
- Promoting a smoke and vape free Australia by exploring a generational phase out of tobacco products and banning political donations from the tobacco industry
There’s still so much for us to do to ensure there is fairness, equality and respect in our treatment and support of people living with a chronic lung condition or lung cancer.
Together we can reduce the burden of lung disease and lung cancer, protecting the lung health of Australians.
